The new base variant of the Freelander 2 whilst being Rs 3.5 lakh cheaper than the higher spec TD4 SE version has mostly shed the sort of gizmo and glitter you'd find hard to notice
The Freelander 2 besides carrying the distinction of being Land Rover’s only Completely-Knocked-Down (CKD) SUV to be manufactured here in India, is also a very popular vehicle globally and perhaps the most practical and versatile LR for Indian roads.
That being said, price hikes over the years has only made the Freelander 2 that much more expensive for buyers. Having given that some thought the Tata Motor’s owned British marquee has just launched a more affordable Business Edition variant of the same.
Before you jump to any conclusions with regards to its drop in performance, be advised the 2.2-litre TD4 and SD4 engine options mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox remain unchanged on the Business Edition.
Even the exhaustive list of safety tech, that is so synonymous with any Land Rover vehicle for that matter has been carried onto the Business Edition. Starting with airbags tucked into every corner, ABS, EBD, Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control, Emergency Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control, it’s all right there where it should be.
To lower the pricing on this base trim however, Land Rover has done away with certain cosmetic upgrades, most of which were added to the refreshed Freelander 2 model launched earlier this year.
Heated mirrors, front door puddle lamps, the sunroof, seat mounted armrests, electrically adjustable front seats, a Meridian audio system and the 7inch infotainment display (now 4.2 inch) are basically what’s missing on the TD4, S BE. But then again you are saving almost Rs 3.5 lakh if you are willing to part with them.
Priced at Rs 37.63 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) the Business Edition, while being the more affordable variant in the Freelander 2 range, is fundamentally a mere cosmetic compromise. Even if it’s the only one currently fitting your luxury SUV budget, don’t hesitate.
